(Silver Screen! Monday! Magpeperform ang MedChoir classmates!)

Kumusta naman ang med so far? Hmmmm.

Now for the non-acad stuff.. ang masasabi ko lang.. it’s been one hell of a ride. haha!

I guess everybody in our class will agree that this sem’s purpose is mainly for adjustment. Whether it might be adjusting to Manila “breeze” (pollution), to living away from home, to not having contact with family, to doing things your own way.. change was there and we all had to deal with it. I think all of us were able to do this; iba iba lang ang style..

(Silver Screen! For the Ondoy victims!)

Some realizations:
– I’m lucky to have roommates like Glai and Mae. 🙂 Dami nilang dalang food e. Heheh.
– I’m not as energetic as before. Duh! Nakakatulog ako sa class eh. Boo. Although minsan kasalanan ng lecturer heheh.
– First impressions don’t count… a lot. Marami na kong nakilalang friends sa class na tingin ko sa simula never kong makakausap/never akong kakausapin. Buti naman! 🙂
– Affiliations shouldn’t count.. more so when class 2014 should come first. Friendships first, din.
– Don’t forget to nourish your spiritual life, na kailangang-kailangan para ma-neutralize ang katoxican ng med. This has put me back on track several times this sem.
– There’s no substitute for family. Sobrang na-miss ko sila this sem. 🙂
– There’s no substitute for home-cooked food. Oo na, ako na ang gutom. =)) After sampling almost all food establishments sa Rob, don’t you wish there was something more.. home-y?

(Silver Screen! Philamlife Theater, Monday night!)

More than adjustment, this sem was also all about self-discovery. Marami akong nagawa this sem na never kong naisip na magagawa ko. Wow.

(Silver Screeeeeen! 150 Pesos lang!)

Sa dami ng stressors sa buhay med, the best gift you can give yourself is gentleness.

If you fall, get up quickly, and learn from your mistake.

Forgive yourself and let yourself be happy.

If good things come, be grateful, and (still) learn from it.

As a future doctor, how can you heal others if you can’t heal your self, hindi ba?

My Life in 25 Factoids

I tag.. mga taong may letter O sa full name nila!

Rules: Once you’ve been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it is because I want to know more about you.

(To do this, go to “notes” under tabs on you profile page, paste these instructions in the body of the note, type 25 random things, tag 25 people (in right corner of app) then click publish.)

  2. Sabi ni mum, sinigurado nilang mapanganak ako in the year of the blue dragon (1988) kasi swerte raw yun.
Aba! Pinaaalis na nga ako!
  4. Three years old na ko nang nakita ko si dad for the first time, nung naisip na nyang lumagi na dito permanently. Kakadepress no?
Kahit on the day itself, kakatok lang sa bahay, “May paparty sina ****, papuntahin mo sina Gi dun dali” tapos magbibihis na kami at magpaparty.
The horror! The horror!
WAITRESS. Haha! Ako kasi tagatimpla ng kape ni daddy noon, tas he calls me his little waitress. I was very enthusiastic, minsan may kasama pang biskwit yung kape sa may saucer.
First time to experience rejection. HAHAHA.
Tsaka yung hand symbol! Ano nga ba yun??
  12. Palakaibigan ako talaga pero siyempre dahil sa madaldal at taklesa ako noon, may mga kaklase akong napipikon sakin. HAHA.
  13. In contrast to the previous item, iyakin ako nung grade school. Haha! Pero ngayon hindi na.. I think. 😄
So drawing drawing mula Grade 6 to second year, tapos debate ng third year tapos environmental group nung fourth year. Meron pang mga guidance office clubs na by invitation only pero hindi naman yun interest ko so di ko siya imemention.
  16. (high school naman!) In terms of level of happiness, ang pinakamasayang time ko dun ay nung sa IV-St Angela, tapos II-St Anne, tapos III-St Ottilia tapos I-St Bernadette. Siguro hindi pa ko nakaadjust nung first year. Haha!Feeling ko inaapi ako. Joke! Sige, random memorable moment per year.. I – ang pagsundo ni R kay Ms B pag Filipino time na bilang parusa..(tanong nyo na lang kung ano.) II – ang pagganap ng isang prosti sa isang class presentation WOW III- ang paggawa ng isang life size mannequin/dummy/effigy ni Edgar Allan Poe with removable head IV- pagsabi ni Dadioh na “Ladies, how are you scientifically and mathematically?” (aka. may babagsak ba senyo sa math at science?)
  18. NEVER ako nakaranas ng JS PROM, thanks to SSAM. Haha! Meron lang HS Dance. At isang beses lang yun, nung fourth year. :))
  19. (college) Dalawang school lang ang inapplyan ko for college (in contrast to 4 schools for med. gally) ang UP at AdMU. UPCAT lang ang nakuha ko kasi nung time na for the Ateneo test, naiwan ko sa locker ko sa school yung test permit ko. Haha! Absent! Pero natanggap pa rin ako sa Bio program nila because of AJSS. Thanks AJSS! 🙂 Pero honestly, hindi ko talaga nakita ang sarili ko bilang isang Atenean that time. Haha UP or bust?
  20. 1st Choice: UP Diliman 1. BS Biology 2. BS Psychology. 2nd choice: UP Manila 1. BS Biology 2. BS Public Health.
Wala naman akong angal sa Ballroom, at least hindi siya as hardcore as basketball or kasing blah as walking for fitness (sorry sa matatamaan). Ayan tuloy, naenjoy ko magballroom. Ayan tuloy, napasali ng UP ODE (now UP DanceSport). Ayan tuloy, maraming nakilala.. ayan tuloy, may specific na taong nakabonding.. ehem. HAHAHA so si dad ang pasimuno diyan.
  22. Pwede kang mapunta sa TV news dahil sa katamaran. Haha! Go Padyak!
Freshie concert umattend ako (first experience with JJs!). Lahat ng lantern parade pinuntahan. Ay, except nung 2nd year kasi 18th birthday party ko nun. Tsaka na-cancel yung Lantern nun diba? Sa TOFI ata. Nakaattend na rin ng UP Fair once every year (special mention yung Love.. RAAAAGE dahil sa JJs ulit). May UP shirt. Gusto ko yung white hoodie jacket with green letters!
1. Retreat ng IV-St. Angela. 2. Bio 116.1 Field work sa Grande Island, Subic, at 3. Bio 160 fieldwork sa Makiling. Ewan ko kung bakit! T____T
  25. (wala na kong maisip!!) I really wish I do well sa interview sa PGH tomorrow! Hindi ko alam kung paano magprepare! Wish me luck!

“Sa maybahay, ang aming bati..”

Naranasan mo bang mangaroling nung bata ka pa?

Naalala ko kasi, lagi naming ginagawa yan kasama ng mga kababata ko na ka-edad ko rin (more or less). Si Kim, Jamie (na boy, not girl :P), Carlo, Jeremy, Casey, Ivy, Ylleana… pati na rin yung ‘younger generation’ kasama si Ambe (my brother) and his posse (puro girls), madalas nagsisimulang mangaroling kapag simula na ng December.

Our typical jingle as soon as we reach each house would always go like this:

Sa maybahay ang aming bati
Meri krisMAS na maluwalhati
Ang pag-ibig ang siyang naghari
Araw araw ay MAGIGING PASKO LAGI!!
Ang sanhi PO ng pagpariTO
Hihingi PO ng aguinal-DO
Kung sakaling kami’y perwiSYO
Pasensya na kayo, kami’y namamasko(Walang pause)WEWISHU a Meri Krismas
We WISHU a Meri Krismas
We WISHU a Meri Krismas
En a hapi nuYIIIR
BAgo sumapit ang PASko
Namimili ang Mami KO
ng mga PANREGALO
parasaarawngPASKO!!!
At itong aking Dadi

HAHAHA! (Bawal kami lumabas ng subdivision)

TEEEENkyu, TEEENkyu
Tenkyu beri much tenkyu!
OR
TEEEENkyu, TEEENkyu
Ambabait ninyo tenkyu!

2. Makakalaro with kababata friends!
3. Magkapera!
4. Makakain ng chichiria and softdrinks with our money.
Sila tansan, kami real toy tambourine. Childhood yabang days. Hahahaha! Take that, losers! HAHAHA. ;P

Ano ba yan!

:))

Christmas is for the children. 🙂

BIO Batch Writeup Final

c/o Euni and I (thanks Google Docs! *thumbs up*)
special thanks to moms for the initial writeup!
[for posterity]

Dimly lit creepy hallways, animals in jars, cabinets filled with plastic-clad bodies, and strangely scented rooms – these are just a few of the things every single Bio senior have learned to love. The many years of residing within the walls of Pav4 and the IB Main Building have definitely rubbed off on the latest batch of graduating Bio majors, from their relatively conservative ways of clothing (no uber-short-short-OMG-short shorts here!) to the biological jargon they utilize in their everyday conversations (“oh my, not another wees-wass bird!”, “na-contaminate yung callus ko!”, “gotta go, magga-gavage pa ko!”, “Oh no, nag-rigor mortis na! Bilis! ATP!”, “Sir F! Sir Q! Sir A! Ma’am U! Ma’am B!, Ma’am RRR!”, “132, 122, 140, 160, 200?! Magpapakamatay ka ba, friend?”). For biology is definitely not just a detached body of knowledge, it is a way of life, and batch 2009 has embraced it to the fullest.

All Science majors are seen as out-of-this-world in terms of intellectual capacity, and today’s Ka-Bios are no exception. However, they differ significantly as they are as diverse as the number of taxonomic groups that exist on Earth. All are biologists, but many stand out as artists, dancers, musicians, debaters, goddesses, impersonators, DJs, fitness trainers, philosophers, singers, LCD technicians, comedians, eventologists, hosts and hostesses, photographers, or some other alter ego. Still, all these groups miraculously blend well together to create one big party at the IB Lobby during common breaktimes. Once the serious acad mode is over, Ka-Bios are often seen still hanging out at the Lobby – eating, chatting, jamming with a guitar, gossiping, and just having fun. We deserve it, you know!

Aside from dichotomous keys, Munsell color charts, chromosomal aberrations, flora, muscle OIAs, and hemolytic points, the most important things a Bio major learns inside IB are those that don’t come from books. It is within these four years that their every single breaking point has been tested. They learned the true meaning of patience, resourcefulness, flexibility, diligence, and camaraderie. Their keen sense of observation coupled with a genuine appreciation for every single living organism, even those that may seem gross, are the best tools one can have at a time where everything seems fast-paced and superficial. It is in these particular aspects that this batch of seniors truly shine. The treacherous road towards a Biology major’s graduation demonstrated natural selection in action, reducing the batch’s number from 89 to 58, ensuring that only the fittest survive, ultimately making them one of the treasured endemic species of the country.

10 Most Memorable HERPeS Fieldwork Moments

(because I’m not good at making blow-by-blow accounts. haha.)
Aug 21-24 2008 Makiling Forest Reserve Bio 160 Off-Campus Fieldwork
Group: Herps (Herpetology: amphibians + reptiles)
Gameplan: Survey Makiling Frog Distribution and Abundance at Disturbed and Undisturbed Areas of the Makiling Botanic Garden
Team: Ako, Jopi, Bet, Joey, Hez, Egee, Mrose, Kacy

  1. MEETING, MEETING, MEETING. Oha. Supposedly, may gagawin na kami on Day 0 (the day of arrival) sa labas, kaso nakakatakot, so natigil.. Anyway, walang araw na lumampas na wala kaming meeting. Favorite room ang 212 (glai-jen-kacy-me) pero we evicted ourselves and went to 205 (jopi-jay-al-roj) nung nagpaprocess na ng data ang inverts sa room namin after our Day1 field (kagulat yun ah, biglang andaming tao sa room. haha)
Pinaakyat kami sa bahay niya (very steep road up from the bridge sa MBG) para lang samahan siyang magbihis. Tapos, nung nagpapatulong kaming maghanap ng sites for our survey, pinadaan pa kami sa matarik na muddy trail sa isang far far away place. Take note, lasing pa siya nung kinausap ni jopi ah. Buti na lang nireport namin kay mam. (Noli pala ang totoong pangalan niya.)
  3. ANONG NAP TIME?. Hehe. Kailangan ding picture-an ang frog specimens sa Museum of Natural History.
  4. FULL BATTLE GEAR. Transect lines? Check. Barbeque sticks na may masking tape para magmukhang flag? Check. Thermometer? Check. Sling psych? Check. Tubig? Check. Individual plastic bags with spec-tags inside? Check. Headlamps? Check. Specially made frog nets? Check. Boots? Check. Take out dinner from Kainan sa SU? Check check check. Pera pambayad sa entrance? Ah, eh.. Hahaha Let’s go!
  5. FIELDWORK SONGS c/o THE BOYS. Hindi yung “The Boys” per se, just the male division of our team – Bet, Joey, and Jopi. Making love, out of nothing at all.. making love, out of nothing at all.. I miss you like crazy, even more than words can say.. I miss you miss you mishoooo….WOOOOOOOW sweet child of miiiiiine…
  6. JOPI and EGEE’s PUTOSTUDIO. Sabi kasi ni ma’am, make very good pictures of the frogs we captured. Hehe. 1. Baliktarin ang palaka para makahiga. Hindi siya gagalaw. (Salamat Ma’am Joni!) 2. Kunin ang palaka sa plastic bag. 3. Ilipat ang palaka sa loob ng Gladlock bag, linisin para maganda at ipatong sa isang very nice green leaf for contrast. 4. Tadaaaah.
  7. INTRODUCE YOURSELF. NO WAY. INTRODUCE YOURSELF. OKAAAY. Haha! Solo kasi namin eh. Day 2 morning – pagkatapos ng super-late breakfast, pagka-photograph ng frogs, pagkanood ng Olympics, paghintay kina Mrose at Kacy na bumaba ng campus to buy food, pagkatapos ng super-late lunch (kami lang ata may ulam na chicken curry kasi inubusan na kami ng food.. bakit kaya), pagkatapos ng data input, at way before our next fieldwork… nanood kami ng movie sa laptop ni Bet (Bring It On: All or Nothing)! Haha. Natuwa ako kasi first time ko makanood ng Bring It On movie. Hehehe.
  8. ANG GLADLOCK AT PANGGUGULAT. Hehe. T-T Na-stress si Hez nung tumakbo siya from MBG to TREES tapos siya yung tinanong about the Gladlock. Peace tayo! Gu-bats. 🙂
  9. BUFO BUFO BUFO. One of the definitive moments of our fieldwork. Grabe. Uy, salamat kay Roger for holding the bag 🙂 It took tons of courage for him to hold that bag.
  10. KULITAN/BANGAG/HUH??? MOMENTS. Haynaku, too many to mention.
  • Go bats! Gu-bats!
  • Introduce yourself! Okay. – Ate Nicdye
  • Ang fantastic shadow show ni BetJoey
  • Grabe andaming Rysotta sa transect namin! Ewwww.- herps group –tapos biglang- Andami ng kare-kare no? – Hez Huuuuuuh?? HAHA
– Margie
  • Ano yan, toxics? – Roger (habang hawak ang Bufo bag).
  • Ang Processing Party after Day2’s fieldwork: may ice cream, softdrinks, Stax, at Magic Flakes. Whoohoo..

Great job, herpmates! Di pa tapos ang trabaho natin! May paper pa tayo! :))

Reminiscing

Think back to your first year in college. Let’s see how much you remember and how much you regret. (galing kay eejay na kinuha niya from vica. ahaha!)

*What section were u?
Hindi section nun eh.. block! Block M-3! 🙂

*Who were your seatmates?

*Still remember your english teacher?
Eng 1 – Concepcion, Eng 10 – Calderon

*What was your first class?
Nung 1st sem: Geol 11 pag MTh, PE 2 Social Dance pag TF. Nung 2nd sem: Envi Sci 1 pag MTh, English 10 pag TF.

*Who was your crush back then?

Haha! Fine. Uhm.. Sige, there were FOUR pero secret na lang kung sino sino sila.

*Made friends to the higher years?
Onaman. Hindi raw ako halatang freshie e. 😀 I remember Kuya Jayson (RA sa floor nina Aidz), mga classmate sa GE subjects, and my orgmates sa DanceSport.

*Had a boyfriend/girlfriend?
First year? Wala pa 😉

*How was your class schedule?
Wow. Andami kong 1.5 hour breaks.

*Made any enemies?
Meron ba? Haha! Si Roni lagi kong kaaway. 😀 Lagi ko kasing kasama nun e! Kopyahin ba naman schedules ko for the first and second sem.

*Who was your favorite teacher(s)?
Sir Emoy, na nagsabing walang social life ang nagiINTARMED, Ma’am A, my dear PE teacher and org adviser, Sir Acy Yago, Mr. ChemBoard Topnotcher, Sir Castronuevo na may kahawig na batchmate.

*What sport did you play?
DanceSport 😀 (karir days pa nun. I’d come home 2-3x a week no later than 9pm)

*Back then, do you always buy your lunch?
Yep. Nagsawa na sa kakabaon nung high school. It was heaven! Hahaha. Pansin niyo ba yun? Kung hindi CASAA… Chateau Verde! 😄 hahaha joke lang. Ang sosyal naman.

*Were you a party animal?
Hindi.

*JJ – jumping jologs

*Were you well known in your school?
Haha! Joke lang. Most well-known moment siguro nung nag-trip ako nung event sa Bahay ng Alumni tapos nasabunutan ko si Ate Cha before our salsa performance. Sorry!

*Skip classes?
Never! Kahit ngayon.

*Did you get suspended/expelled?
Anong klaseng tanong to?

*Can you sing the alma mater?

*What was your favorite subject?
Strangely enough, Philo 11. Weirdness talaga. This was my blog entry nung July 20 2005

Logic

Recent Grafitti seen on my chair, AS 420:

PANGKULAY SA BUHOK JOY KALAMANSI KAYA GREEN

Come to think about it, greenish nga ang kulay ng buhok niya kapag nakatapat sa nakakabulag na fluorescent lights ng AS 420.

Walang natawa dahil walang naka-get. haha That must have been embarassing.

*What is your school’s full name?                                                                                  University of the Philippines – Diliman (Campus?)

*Where did you go most often during breaks?
Kung saan may food. 🙂 Haha.. Food-o-taxis 😛

*If you could go back in time and do it all over, would you?
Sure! Hahaha!

*What do you remember most about 1st yr?
“Para kang nakalabas sa lungga!” – Ate Tin. Neh, haha. It was the start of rediscovering myself as a person. Malay ko bang mahilig ako mag-internet, mag-blog, sumayaw, gumala-gala, at makidaldal? 🙂 Go UP!

I was so lost, but now I believe…

Carry this picture for luck

kept in a locket
tucked in your collar
close to your chest.
Make it a secret
shown to the closest friends..
And meet me at quarter to 7
the sun will still shine then
at this time of year.
We’ll head to the inlet
and we’ll share a bottle there

And color the coast with your smile
its the most genuine thing
that I’ve ever seen
I was so lost
but now I believe

And follow me south of the big docks
they tether the boats
the rich men revere
as so important
they hire our fathers to steer.
And down to the edge of the water

where we’ll spill our guts
and we’ll name our fears
I’ll give you this picture
keep it and don’t
be
scared..

And color the coast with your smile
it’s the most genuine thing
that I’ve ever seen.
I was so lost
but now I believe
and the coast
your smile is the most genuine thing
that I’ve ever seen
I was so lost
but now I believe
and I believe
now I believe
now I believe

Dashboard Confessionals – “Carry This Picture”

I don’t know why I feel so nostalgic right now.. I know this song matters to me as much as the one who first introduced me to it. Yes, you were totally emo then. But it had its benefits. Haha. There’s nothing to get worried about. 🙂

Childhood Memory Revisited

Because my cousin came here to Manila from Bicol, our family decided to treat her to an afternoon at MoA. What to do at MoA? haha! She wanted to try out ice skating, so my brother and I came with her inside the rink.  It was fun, although the price is higher than what I expected. X.x Well, considering the service (which was not bad at all), the whole experience was fun.

Not too many people know that I was into figure skating when I was younger. All I remember is that when the Sta Lucia Grand Mall opened many years ago, they had a really big skating rink, even bigger than Megamall’s. It was new and I wanted to try it out. The next thing I knew, my mom signed me up for formal skating lessons once a week.

I also remember that those lessons were held every Sunday, before the mall opens to the public (around 9, I think) and after our family went to mass, I’d change into my skating clothes inside the car. At first they were just shirts and jogging pants, but the wardrobe eventually included leotards, leggings, jackets, and skirts.

There was a specific summer when I had to go to Sta Lu almost everyday to practice (during this time I was already having one-on-one training sessions with Coach Evelyn)  and my constant companion was my ate who patiently waited for me but didn’t want to ice skate.

Surprisingly, I achieved quite a few things with the skating thing.. I was able to finish all the primary levels (alpha to gamma), participate in 2 inter-mall competitions, get medals, and join the mall’s Christmas on ice show.

I loved wearing my skates (back then it cost 5.5 k), wearing skirts even though it was cold, sipping hot chocolate that burned the tip of my tongue, warming up sa may rails, bunny hopping, 3-turning, sculling hockey-stopping and running around the rink. I remember one of the big coaches lifting me off the ice and twirling me until I got dizzy. Haha. Those were the days.

So why did I stop? Well, the studies had to come first (haha). But the ultimate reason was that the management decided to close the rink after (I think) it didn’t do well financially. They removed the rink and if you visit the mall now, all you’ll see is a tiled central area where they do concerts and all the promotional stuff they do in malls. Therefore, the skates became unused and right now I don’t know where they ended up. Hmm.. I think they’re at our old house and it’s too small and rusty already. However, I still have the gold costume I wore at my last compet (the one I’m wearing in the photo) right here in the closet. Hahaha

Nostalgic? Haha. Imagine my feeling when I was back next to the rink yesterday, wearing rented skates with my brother and cousin. I felt a bit excited going back, but I was also feeling scared because it had been such a long time since I’ve skated. What if I went back to zero and fell flat on my face?

Turns out my body still remembers how to balance! It was surprising. I felt as if I was back in my element as I skated as fast as I did years ago. Wow. Of course I couldn’t do all the moves I did back then, but I saw my younger self in those little girls practicing their choreography for their ice skating show.

Figure skating is for little girls. 😉

During our early dinner at Italianni’s after, I wondered out loud, what would have happened to me if I hadn’t quit skating? I missed quite a lot.. I quit before they sent representatives to join ice skating competitions abroad. What if I were supposed to be one of them? Haha.

Haha.. Oo nga no..

High School Life, Oh My High School Life.. :P
